You Better Believe it, No Mountain is too High to Climb — Stephen J. Wampler is Living Proof

Steve WamplerFor anyone who feels beset by personal limitations, let them look no further than Worldwide Who’s Who® member Stephen Wampler for drive and inspiration to accomplish anything imaginable. Steve, who was born with cerebral palsy, has limited use of one arm and does not have use of his legs. In 1992, he received a Bachelor’s Degree in environmental engineering from the University of California, Davis. Moreover, he is a committed husband and a father of two.

But his achievements do not stop there. As with most great people, he has taken on the task of helping others. Steve has devoted his life to bringing positive change to the lives of physically disabled kids.

In 2002, he founded the Stephen J. Wampler Foundation to provide outreach and resources to disabled youth. As CEO of the organization, he is responsible for the formation of programs and activities that immerse them in the outdoors surrounded by nature and conservation, and wilderness living. One of Steve’s main priorities when he founded the Wampler Foundation was to fund Hawley Lake, which is part of a camp he attended as a child and where he first learned how to overcome his disability.

Presently, the Wampler Foundation — in a collaborative effort with the City of Sacramento — funds outdoor enrichment and recreation programs for kids from five western states. The foundation also endows financing to numerous other state programs. Steve is also active as a public speaker, motivating and illuminating others. He is endorsed by numerous organizations, including Time Inc., Waste Management and Media Networks, Inc. Celebrities such as Will Ferrell, various cast from SNL and Ellen DeGeneres also tout his cause.

In 2010, Steve achieved his goal of becoming the first person with cerebral palsy to climb El Capitan — a towering granite rock formation rising more than 3,000 feet from the ground in Yosemite National Park. Prior to this he underwent months of rigorous training. He started with a reasonable workout regimen (one hour per week) and worked that up to the tune of five hours a day, six days a week. On September 17, 2010, after 20,000 pull-ups over the course of six days, he achieved what most would think is impossible — he triumphed over El Capitan.

Steve’s feat is a validation of personal willpower and a substantial victory for disabled populations. Numerous high-profile organizations have taken note of his extraordinary talents and abilities. In 2011, United Cerebral Palsy™ — a large-scale education, advocacy and support services group — bestowed him with the Life Without Limits Award. ESPN also got wind of his climb, and recently nominated him for an ESPY award in the Best Male Athlete with a Disability category.

The ESPY award is a tremendous accolade shared by only the world’s most revered athletes, and Steve is proud to have been nominated for the prestigious honor. Dubbed a local hero, Steve makes every effort to continue to make a difference in the lives of people everywhere, from all walks of life.

Constance A. Burns Established National Association of American Veterans, Inc. to Help Wounded Veterans

Constance A. BurnsFor years, Constance A. Burns has advocated for those who care for severely injured military service members and veterans. In the past years, many citizens have stepped forward in support of military veterans, and to champion the initiatives of individuals that have suffered trauma and serious injuries while protecting and serving the country that they love. As one of those dedicated and committed citizens, and also as a caregiver for the past three decades, Ms. Burns remains committed to protecting and serving the men and women that have pledged their lives to the United States of America in the name of military service.

Constance BurnsAt the helm of the National Association of American Veterans, Inc., otherwise referred to as NAAV, Ms. Burns manages the entire operation as its Chief Executive Officer, handles the budget, establishes contracts, partnerships and sponsors, and raises funds. The organization, established in 2005, has made major headway in providing services to all veterans and their family members. The NAAV offers health care information, emergency assistance and advocacy, counseling, housing coordination, and educational programs for all service members, with an emphasis on the severely wounded and single parent service members, military caregivers, veterans, and their families at risk of not returning to normalcy after serving in a war, and residing in underserved areas nationwide.

Constance Burns' NAAV Business CardIn 2011, NAAV created the Military Family Program, which provides accredited self-care training, financial literacy, career coaching, respite care and access to resources for military families caring for severely injured veterans in the Washington, D.C. area. Plans are currently underway to implement the Military Family Program in the greater Washington, D.C., Fisher House. In addition, in January 2012, NAAV donated laptop computers, equipment and more to 40 new residents of Fisher House. Ms. Burns hopes that the new program will serve as a pilot project that will be adopted at Fisher Houses near other major military medical centers across the U.S.

Ms. Burns is proud of her accomplishments in having established an organization that provides assistance to veterans and their families. Data indicates that today, one of every three military service members returning from war is injured, and  one in five are disabled with long-term care needs. NAAV’s policies follow the guidelines and procedures established by the Department of Defense and the Veterans Administration to advocate for service members and veterans for entitlements and benefits.

Ms. Burns is passionate about recognizing the contributions of our country’s pioneering military men and women. In addition to founding and running the NAAV, Ms. Burns has co-authored three books, and shehas been featured in two documentaries, “Two Thousand Notable American Women” and “Great Women of the 21st Century.” Her contributions to the 2009 book, “The U.S. Army’s First, Last, and Only All-Black Rangers,” earned her honors and recognition from David H. Petraeus, then-commander of U.S. Forces-Afghanistan, and Gen. William E. Ward, then-head of the U.S. Africa Command. In 2007, Ms. Burns advised the Task Force on Mental Health and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and the President’s Commission on Care of America’s Returning Wounded Warriors. The recommendations she made to the latter commission paved the way for the Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act, signed by President Obama on May 5, 2010. Ms. Burns also served as an adviser for the National World War II Reunion, D-Day to France and a Salute Parade to WWII Veterans.

Ever passionate about the work she performs with the veterans, Ms. Burns works with private organizations to procure grants and contracts that will enable the National Association of American Veterans to provide accredited coaches and trainers to equip families with the tools, training and resources they need to become optimally effective caregivers of veterans and military service members.
