Worldwide Branding Member Theresa Magro, VP of the Michael Magro Foundation, to Hold An Evening of Tasting and Giving Tonight

Theresa MagroTheresa Magro, Vice President of Michael Magro Foundation, will be hosting an annual “Evening of Tasting and Giving” at The Carltun in Long Island’s breathtaking Eisenhower Park. The event is set to begin at 6:30pm EST.

Some of Long Island’s best restaurants, bakeries and wineries will be available for tasting. At most recent count, 23 restaurants, five bakeries, and several wineries and breweries had signed on to feature their wares; there will also be a gelato station, as well as two martini bars.

Like any parent, when Ms. Magro’s 13 year old son was diagnosed with cancer, she felt helpless. It was 2005 and her son Michael, who was kind and had such a zest for life, was fighting for his life. Shortly after his diagnosis, Ms. Magro co-founded Michael Magro Foundation, to aid children suffering from cancer. A few short months later, Michael lost his battle with leukemia. In his memory, the foundation honors his life and continues to help other pediatric cancer patients.

These include “A Girl’s Best Friend,” which encompass items from Michael Kors and Pandora; the “Everything Goes With Wine” basket includes a private wine tasting tour at Waters Crest Winery in Cutchogue, and a basket for those who love coffee—“A Jolt of Nespresso” featuring a Nespresso Pixie coffee maker.

Martine L. Nolletti, Chairman of Cornerstone Project Incorporated, Strives to Assist Underprivileged Women and Children in Africa

Martine NollettiWhen Martine L. Nolletti met the co-founder of Cornerstone Project Incorporated, a native Kenyan, she felt compelled to give back to the women and children of Kenya. Currently serving as the chairman for the nonprofit organization, she assists in providing education for AIDS orphans in Kenya. In her position, Ms. Nolletti oversees all daily business operations and logistics. This includes orchestrating education and housing for children orphaned by the AIDS pandemic in Northwest Kenya. Currently, Cornerstone Project Incorporated is working diligently to construct a boarding school in the area which will house and teach both orphaned and tuition paying students. Seeking to minimize annual operating costs, they will rely partially on charitable donations to maintain the institution. Ever eager to bring awareness to this cause, and receive additional donations, Ms. Nolletti also handles fundraising, business development, and design in pursuit of ecological sustainability for Cornerstone Project Incorporated. Attributing her success to collaborating with and listening to others, she plans to raise money to open a vocational high school and conference center for adult education.

As with most journeys, Ms. Nolletti’s journey for personal empowerment lead her to the absolute and resolute desire to assist others in  achieving their own empowerment, especially where these challenges are the greatest: for the children of the poorest of the poor, living in the worst of circumstances. This is how she began her journey and where she found her own peace in the process. Ms. Nolletti feels that she has been blessed with good health and good fortune along the way and it has been a great gift to assist others in flourishing.

It has been Ms. Nolletti’s observation that many well-intended projects in the philanthropic arena fail, and she has come to some conclusions as to why. “Many projects are taken on from a ‘missionary’ ideology,” she says, “and imply that the group being served does not have the sovereign capability to manage themselves. This smacks of the colonialist mentality that has decimated entire cultures for millennia. My approach is to provide assistance to an area or a project where the change is sought after by the group themselves, organically and with respect to that areas culture. Women and children are at the heart of my philanthropic pursuits as they have been most largely marginalized globally.”

“Another area I have observed that maligns the philanthropic arena is the paradoxical ego attachment on the part of the philanthropist. This produces control issues that typically strangle a project before it even gets out of the gates. I try to assume all projects have nothing to do with me…because they don’t really. That has been the key to my success.”

Ms. Nolletti is professionally affiliated with US Green Building Council. Away from the demands of her work, she enjoys Yoga, gardening, traveling, architecture, and interior design.

Gary Maskagak Seeks Cure for Cancer through Community and Government Services

health care cancer research treatment cureFor more than 20 years, Gary Maksagak has served as facilities manager for Community and Government Services. The community service organization provides programs and funding which support core municipal operations, infrastructure development, and land development. Its main goal is to maintain assets in a safe level for public interest. Client departments rely on safe operation and maintenance from the Asset Management Division.

In his position, Mr. Maksagak communicates with clients and community government departments. He is responsible for overseeing five communities, including health care centers, schools, and wildlife offices, as well as supervision of nine employees. Mr. Maksagak serves on the board of directors for Northern Territories Water and Waste Association and, is an active member of Worldwide Branding. In the coming years, he plans to enter retirement and continue pursuing community services on a personal level.

He is seeking to become involved with various cancer societies and charitable organizations which are actively pursuing cancer research. Jaine M. Schmidt Gives Visions of Joy as Head of Creative Services for Lighthouse International

With excellent business acumen, she pursued an opportunity in the nonprofit sector with Lighthouse International. The nonprofit organization provides help, hope and resources to children and adults who have experienced, or are at risk for experiencing, vision loss. Their range of prevention, treatment, and empowerment services extends to an international demographic. In an effort to ensure productivity and independence amongst their members, Lighthouse International provides early intervention, youth and social services, assistive technology training, and vision rehabilitation. For members seeking career assistance, the organization extends opportunities in job placement, internships, pre-employment training, and job retention to ensure success. Lighthouse International also offers services, which aid members in performing everyday functions, such as programs, which make it easier for people with vision impairment to read text messages or books. Aiding people who are visually impaired for over 100 years, Lighthouse International continues to serve as a beacon of hope for those struggling daily with vision loss.

As Lighthouse’s director of creative services, Ms. Schmidt utilizes her strengths in marketing and graphic design to grow and strengthen the organization’s brand recognition as the leading resource in low vision. She is responsible for overseeing the entire panoply of printed, electronic and display materials for the external activities of Lighthouse International along with ensuring a consistent and relevant external presence of the organization through the website, social media, public relations and advertising campaigns. As director of creative services, she exercises overall executive responsibility for the design, development and production of all graphic materials, working closely with appropriate members of the management in all departments. A key element of the job is to insure that there is extreme consistency among imaging and messaging protocols, as well as quality control, in all Lighthouse materials.

In the coming years, she plans assist Lighthouse in the expansion of programs and services dedicated to getting the latest technology to people with vision loss.

Ms. Schmidt is charitably involved with Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America, New York Cares, the National Hemophilia Foundation and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In her free time, she enjoys golfing as a hobby.

Betsy S. Mayfield Gives People Struggling through Addiction an Opportunity for New Life with Recovery

Betsy S. MayfieldBetsy S. Mayfield is a Mental Health and Substance Abuse Therapist, and a Substance Abuse Professional Therapist who has nurtured a growing skill set over the course of a career that spans nearly a decade. She continuously strives for excellence in her endeavors to make a difference in the world of treating mental illness and addiction, and specializes in substance abuse treatment. Ms. Mayfield currently oversees daily operations of Let It Be Counseling, LLC, the organization that provides substance abuse and mental health evaluations. There, she is responsible for monitoring patient assessment and evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation planning, and mental health and substance abuse counseling services.

Ms. Mayfield attributes her success to motivation, and her willingness to help others develop a voice to flourish in life. She became involved in her profession to help those facing mental health and substance abuse challenges. Starting in the nonprofit organization has led her to ongoing profession progression of opportunities in helping others. The highlight of her counseling career is having the privilege to walk with someone as they begin to see the light as they come out of their darkness.

She is a member of the Association of Private Practice Therapists and the National Board for Certified Counselors. Daniel LeBlanc Gives Youngsters “A Home for Life” at “L’appart à moi”

Daniel LeBlancThough Daniel LeBlanc has a long professional career with the CN Railroad, and is involved in all aspects of rail-based logistic solutions for customers across multiple industries, he feels that one of his proudest achievements was creating a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide appropriate long-term housing for individuals with intellectual disabilities, such as his own adult son. Together with other parents, Mr. LeBlanc established the foundation known as “L’Appart a moi” with the objective of making this dream a reality. The project consists of several bachelor-type condominiums that will be designed to meet the needs of these individuals. As Mr. LeBlanc explained, it is crucial for special needs individuals to have safe and secure housing so that they may fully contribute to society in their own ways. Though financing such projects is always challenging, the most critical aspect of the organization is having committed, well-intentioned people at the helm. Mr. LeBlanc considers himself fortunate to be working with just such a group of dedicated parents and individuals that share this common vision. He is also grateful for the support he receives from his employer.

Mr. LeBlanc believes that everyone is entitled to a long, full, and happy life, and he and his wife plan to give their three sons the best opportunities in life while making unique provisions for their son with special needs so he may maintain his independence. Once the first complex has been constructed, Mr. LeBlanc plans to share his journey with other parents, with the hope that the Foundation’s mission will be adopted by other groups across Canada.

This project was conceived by a group of parents wanting to offer a stable, permanent and safe living environment to their adult children with Down Syndrome or another intellectual disability.

Mr. LeBlanc received a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering in 1979. In his spare time, he is heavily involved with the Special Olympics. In three years, Mr. LeBlanc expects to have completed his first building. He will then lead the charge to build additional ones.

Dawn Fontaine Helps to Strengthen Families and Prevent Child Abuse and Neglect as Family Center Coordinator of the Community Connections of Brockton

Dawn Fontaine works with pilot programs to prevent cruelty to childrenDawn Fontaine gained a breadth of experience in nonprofit management and child services when she worked for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. In her position, she was responsible for working with the Attorney General on prevention, providing mediation services to cease fighting between parents and officials, and overseeing all areas of protection and abuse prevention. In 2010, she assumed a position as coordinator for The Family Center Community Connections of Brockton. The nonprofit organization provides community services to individuals and families in a local area near Rockland, Massachusetts.

At her current post as coordinator, Ms. Fontaine works with pilot programs to prevent cruelty to children—this role involves collaborating with the Department of Social Services. A natural leader, she provides services for nine towns in Brockton and organizes activities, support, and social events. Ms. Fontaine oversees four staff members, 40 volunteers, and approximately eight interns. She has become proficient in coordinating grant writing, bills, and invoices. Ms. Fontaine holds a Master of Science in administration of justice from Salve Regina University, a Bachelor of Science in administrative justice from Roger Williams University, and completed community engagement training. She also earned certificate and training diplomas from Prevention Institute.

Ms. Fontaine is well known for her desire to help others succeed and for providing necessary resources to those in need. She seeks to assist those who are struggling while empowering them to take back their life and find their own independence. Ms. Fontaine is a believer in the theory of “paying it forward” and often encourages clients to help their neighbors once they have restored their own lives. Ideally, she strives to help families to completely prevent child abuse and neglect. Through a sound educational foundation and parental training, Ms. Fontaine believes this is attainable for any and all family units.

In looking forward to a bright future, Ms. Fontaine aims to help Brockton build leaders, and not politicians. She seeks to reach out and help people become more involved in the community so that they can have a voice in how things are managed. Kelvin Glen Paves the Way to Growth in Educational Programs in Africa

Kelvin GlenAfter two decades of success in the nonprofit and corporate social investment industries, Kelvin Glen is uniquely qualified to lead The Tiger Brands as director. This foundation focuses on providing education and school feeding programs that feed 4,300 children in 62 schools. As director of the organization, Mr. Glen ensures that the strategy and budget are achieved. He also works with schools and the government. Mr. Glen’s hard work and ability to work at strategic and operational levels have led him to continued success at the company. He has seen how much work needs to be done in Africa, and is passionate about making a difference.

Mr. Glen is pursuing a Master of Business Administration, and earned a degree in social science in 1993. Prior to joining The Tiger Brands, he served a number of boards in both executive and non-executive roles. He also worked at companies including the Charities Aid Foundation Australia, the South African Red Cross and the Giving Organisation. Donna York: An Agent of Positive Change and ALS Awareness as President of HARK Inc.

Donna York Serves as an Agent of Positive Change as the President of HARK Inc.HARK Inc. was founded in 2012 with the focus on making educational and support services an abundant resource for families of people dealing with ALS. At the helm of the company is Donna York, who created the nonprofit after taking care of her father as he battled with ALS for a year and half. Chiefly amongst Ms. York’s many goals for the organization is that of her objective to educate others, raise awareness, and inspire others to hold on to their faith when facing ALS. Notably, Ms. York completed a documentary that was screened at NBC, which she hopes to use to raise more awareness for ALS.

In 2012, Ms. York was honored as the Somerset County Woman of the Year. She has also been the recipient of the Paul & Jean Krauss Award for Service to Youth. Most recently, Ms. York was honored by Worldwide Who’s Who for her contributions to those facing or caring for someone with ALS. Ms. York is pursuing certification in nonprofit management at Rutger’s University to further her knowledge of running a nonprofit. In the years to come, Ms. York intends to promote her film as much as possible, with the hope of gaining national recognition for her organization.
